Josmarin was a divining mage who sailed with the crew of The Redeemer; using his magical skills alongside a smokey sphere through which he predicted the weather. With this foreknowledge, he helped guide the ship away from storms.

One day, while his crew was sailing near Jaia, an eldritch being conjured a powerful storm that wrecked the Redeemer at the shores of the Grand Cleft. Those who survived seek shelter and survival in Dead Man's Grasp, an old ghost town near the coast.

Josmarin blames himself for the wreck and the deaths of his crew, and he seeks to protect them from whatever force made them stuck here. He has been driven into madness by the creatures of this area. As he has seen a clone of The Redeemer and copies of his crewmates created by a cult of the eldritch being called "The Undertakers," he now wonders if he is truly Josmarin, or rather another clone created by this cult to feed their master. He can't go home and steal Josmarin's life if it is not truly his.
