Caelum was once an assistant to a shopkeeper in Bazagon City. One day, the shop was attacked by a group of bandits who cut down a patron and seemed intent to do the same to others so they could take everything. Caelum called out to anything that would give him the boldness and the power to save the innocent people in the shop, and something answered.
Caelum stood up and fired blasts of magical energy from his hands, brutally slaying the bandits; even as they cowered in fear. The people were both grateful and horrified.
Caelum left Bazagon and became a mercenary; using his newfound violent abilities to make a living. He guarded merchant goods and sometimes performed some less scrupulous tasks so he had the coin to get by. Eventually, he fought as a mage-for-hire in the elven wars of Gildas.
When the warring was over and it was decreed that adventurers could start a new colonization effort in the marches of Chateuclair, Caelum jumped at the chance. He saw it as an opportunity to understand his magic more fully, gain the coin he needed to get out of the mercenary business, and gain a new identity for himself.
The elves of Gildas suddenly pulled the plug on the colonization effort; taking what land and earnings the adventurers had collected for themselves. Caelum became cynical and renounced his patron, claiming that it had left him behind for allowing this to happen. He took on training as a fighter and leaned into the violence that he had learned as a mercenary.
During his time assisting in expeditions for the Vermillion Mining Company, his passion for protecting residents of Chateuclair from another band of bandits reminded him of why he took his pact to begin with. His patron returned to him and grants him power to enact justice once again; though they may disagree on what that means. He will sometimes be seen having arguments about such things with an invisible force.
