Hexcrawl Maps

WestMarches.games offers this tool to give GMs an easy and fun way to create a map together. You can use the tool however you would like, but it is recommended to start small and add to the world when needed, only a few tiles at a time, and let your players and GM create the map as it is explored.

For comprehensive guidance on running hexcrawl campaigns, check out The Alexandrian's Hexcrawl guide, which provides excellent framework and methodology for this style of play.

Art credits: The beautiful tiles used in this tool were created by David G. Baumgart.

Creating a Map

To create a map, go to your world wiki editor and select the page type "Hexcrawl Map".

You unlock more tiles, objects, and larger maps by subscribing to my Patreon. See Community Boost for more information.

Map Orientation

If you are migrating from an existing hex grid map that uses a different orientation (flat-top cells), you can maintain the layout by rotating the map 30 degrees.

To clarify which direction is north, you can adjust the compass in the "Page Settings".

Terrain Variants

You can cycle through terrain tile variants by clicking on a tile again with the same terrain type selected.

Paths and Rivers

The path tool and river tool can automatically place paths and rivers by clicking and dragging your cursor between tiles.

On touch devices, you can click on a tile and then click on an adjacent tile to create connections.

Try It Out

You can try out the tool here. The map is stored in your browser.
