Jarucas always felt like it was his place to take care of me. He owed that to our parents, I think. At least that's what he would tell you, if you were to ask him.
But he's gone now. He and Taralindriel, the pixie he'd fallen in love with, were the only family I had left after the forest burned and the raiders left our home in ruin. He taught me everything I know about the land, and how to survive in it. And Tara taught me everything I know about magic. She always said I had a light in me, though I never really believed her.
I miss them so much it hurts, and though he never left a footprint in the woods, I still know how to follow where he led. I see him sometimes... the black shadow of a wolf in my periphery. Watching. Guiding my arrow, pointing out what I have missed. One day, I'll build a new home grander than the one we lost, and nobody will ever be able to take it away.
