Vess was raised in Karsov Keep and served on the wall-watch, lighting gate-lanterns, checking travelers at curfew, and keeping watch when the fog rolled in from the coast. Most people do not know what she truly is… only that she is striking: silver-white hair, warm golden eyes, and a quiet presence that seems strongest in dim light.
After a wounded caravan reached Karsov, claiming others were still trapped beyond the lanternlight, Vess joined a few Hounds to help. They saved two survivors, but she was badly injured causing her to loose her unborn child and her fiancé was killed by Orc's in the attack. She was going to give up the watch and start a family but, Now rededicated herself and carries a spear, shield, traveling armor, and a small silver censer in the shape of a lantern into the wilds as a young Lantern Warden of Illus with an oath to bring Illus light to Mormantia.
She often repeats the saying of Illus: “Restraint of impulse is freedom of the soul.”

Final Farewell:
The inn did not go silent all at once.
It happened slowly.
A cup left untouched. A chair no one moved. The small place near the table where Vess had stood that morning, close to the lantern, speaking softly about courage and roads and the dark.
Then the wind came through the open window.
It moved across the room like a hand, stirring ash in the hearth.
On the community board, one scrap of paper trembled.
Written with "Tell me then. Which darkness calls to you?"
The tack loosened.
For a moment, the note held.
Then it tore free.
It spun once through the inn, passing over the table where strangers had become companions, past the cup of tea she never returned to finish, past the lantern burning steady in the draft.
The paper slipped through the open window and out into the gray air above Karsov Keep.
It rose over the wall-watch where she had once carried a spear. Over the gate-lanterns she had once lit by hand. Over the road she had chosen instead of safety.
Then the wind took it farther.
Out beyond the roofs.
Beyond the chapel bells.
Beyond the last stones of the keep.
Over the dark sea.
For a while, the little note shone pale against the morning sky.
Then it became only a white fleck in the distance.
Then nothing.
And in the Bent Pike Tavern, the lantern kept burning as a cup of tea goes cold.

*The Bent Pike is quieter than usual as Kefi, Stoyko, Skaljik, and Radomir return from the north. There is no cheering at the door. Only the scrape of chairs, the lowering of voices, and the empty space among them where Vess should have been.....
....“Vess served Illus, and died doin’ what a Hound ought to do: standin’ between the helpless and the dark.”
*The tavern falls silent as the front door opens once more. The Gravewarden Llewynn enters, flanked by two acolytes of Illus. They move with solemn purpose toward Vess’s body.
Oberyn raises his tankard—not high, but close to his chest.*
“To Vess. May Illus receive ‘er in peace.”
*The room answers in a low murmur.*
“To Vess…”
