TGFS DM Handbook
Previous Section: Post Adventure Reward Distribution
As a DM, you can run random encounters that have a chance to drop treasure! These encounters are rolled and run in text RP channels on discord. See the Player's Guide for general information on random encounters.
The Random Roller Guide in #server-info has all the commands for rolling random encounters and random loot
In order for a DM-ran random encounter to drop treasure, the following must be true:
As a DM running a random encounter, you can give one of your characters 1xp as a reward for running it.
Not every monster carries loot. To determine if a monster has any treasure, check its stat block, and it will state what treasure and what theme the monster may have. Even if a monster has treasure listed on its stat block, it only has a 50% chance of dropping it in a random encounter. Before rolling loot, roll a d2 for each monster that has treasure on its stat block to determine this.
To determine what and how much treasure to roll for each monster, follow these guidelines:
| Monster CR | "Individual" treasure | Themed or "Any" Treasure |
|---|---|---|
| 0-4 | 3d6 gp | Roll on magic table A |
| 5-10 | 2d8 x 10 gp | Roll on magic table B |
| 11-16 | 2d10 x 10 gp | Roll on magic table C |
| 17-22 | TBD | TBD |
| 23+ | TBD | TBD |
You always go by the treasure theme listed on the monster stat block. If it says "any", use "Random" for the theme.
Gold may only be rolled IF the stat block has "individual" as a treasure option. The gold that is rolled is considered the value of all gear and lootables off any bodies.
After determining if and what kind of treasure a monster drops, either roll or dictate to your participants what to roll using the custom commands found in the Random Roller Guide in #server-info.
Keep in mind, not all random encounters mean a combat. This treasure can also be given as a reward from the monster after a social encounter, or any other means that makes narrative sense.
If your own PC is participating in the random encounter, you may take dropped loot OR the 1xp DM reward.
As a DM running a random encounter, you can give one of your characters 1xp as a reward for running it. Additionally, PCs can gain 1 xp on a random encounter if:
Post an adventure with the "random encounter" tag, and title it "Random Encounter". These adventures do not get posted on #adventure-listings.
Manually add your participants (be sure you selected the level range to do so), then distribute any rewards from the encounter as discussed with all participants.
