(IC) Why did you join The Glassfang Syndicate?:
Well, I really want to get out there and see the world and, uh, help fight things? And... well.... Yeah, I really just want to make enough money to open my own alchemist shop. I can do that while working on the skills I need. Also, every group of mercenaries needs someone skilled in healing, hunting, humor, and heating... delicious food. Okay, so there's no good synonyms for cooking that start with H.

As a child, Cal was gifted a book by an elder in his clan. The book was "Fun Fungi Facts For Fun Guys". This ignited his love of lichen, molds, and mushrooms. It also ignited his love of puns, especially alliterative puns. He never quite understood why his clan, and later his master, were always a bit annoyed by his wordplay.
When he was old enough to be apprenticed, he studied under a mushroom farmer/cook, Umrik Sporefriend. Umrik wasn't the friendliest of teachers, but he wasn't unkind and was very skilled at imparting his knowledge.
As Cal got older, he became uncomfortable with the (not wholly inaccurate) perception of duergars as grumpy at best. He shifted his mannerisms a bit to imitate folks outside his species. He felt more at ease acting cheerful and eventually grew to be an atypically sunny denizen of the Underdark.
Cal's clan tended toward ambition and high standards, as did his master. So Cal developed a tendency toward people-pleasing and perfectionism.
After he completed his apprenticeship and struck out on his own, Cal started developing a more broad interest in the application of fungi uses. He's a fantastic cook but has since started to hone skills that combine magic and medicine with mushrooms and molds. He met a half-elf Druid, Acremony Rubens, who helped him develop and unlock his own Druid abilities before parting ways a year ago.
Cal briefly worked in an alchemist shop and decided he wanted to open his own one day. But he wasn't going to do that on his current salary, and waiting for his boss to kick the bucket wasn't how he wanted to go. So when he found a way to make some money and still work on his skills and experiments he decided to try to join the Glassfang Syndicate.
