As she got older, Vae became more serious about training. She wanted to be able to stand alongside the soldiers she had grown up around instead of always being the one watching them train.
She became comfortable with the longbow, preferring to fight from a distance when she could. When things get too close for that, she uses a greatsword instead.
Eventually she became a Dragon Rider and bonded with Azyr, a sapphire dragon.
Azyr quickly became much more than a mount to her. He is her companion and closest friend. He tends to be calmer and more patient than Vae, while also being extremely protective of her. They have spent enough time together that they often seem to understand what the other is thinking without needing to say anything.
Vae doesn't see Azyr as something she owns. He is her bondmate, and she trusts him completely.
Now she has joined the Praetoriani of the Dragon.
For Vae, this isn't simply another military position. It means being able to work alongside people who remind her of the soldiers she grew up with, while finally proving that she can stand among them as an equal.*
She still doesn't know exactly what being a Teratodrakon will mean for her, especially with the possibility of more mutations appearing as she grows older.
But she knows where she came from.
The castle is home. The soldiers are family. Azyr is her bondmate.
And there is probably still a deck of cards somewhere waiting for her.
