Devlin is an orange winged tiefling decked out in practical gear (for a flying artificer anyway), who carries all manner of strange (and often destructive) creations. They have scruffy brown hair, cat-like red eyes with yellow sclera and is short and chubby. They always carry a glass jar with a firefly residing inside, and can often be seen having one-sided chats with it. They claim this little bug is the key to their latest project.
Born and raised in the Southern Ward of Waterdeep to a family of small means, as a child Devlin would gather unwanted junk and build their own toys. This led to a long life passion for crafting. They always thought it would be cool to be a wizard, but due to their circumstances, that was never going to happen. So instead Devlin learned all they could about magic, eventually finding ways to enchant their creations to do what spellcasters could do but, in Devlin’s opinion, in a cooler way.
When they were old enough, they got a job as a courier, taking advantage of their ability to fly. One day, however, everything changed. Devlin had to deliver a very delicate package of Alchemist’s Fire. As they flew over an open court yard, a group of their bullies tried to knock Devlin out of the sky. Fortunately they missed Devlin, but unfortunately, they hit the package. As the potions fell into the courtyard, igniting in a large explosion, and setting the buildings on fire, Devlin felt a strange spark of inspiration. They knew they just had to harness such power, no, they could create something even better!
Luckily no one was killed in the accident. There were plenty of injuries though, and of course the large amount of property damage. This cost Devlin their job and membership of the Couriers Guild, as well as the trust from any potential client when they tried going independent. Without the guild membership, even getting permits to fly in certain air space over the city was much harder. However, in a stroke of good luck, that “little” incident caught the attention of a group of adventurers. As it turned out, they could use someone with flight and a few bottles of Alchemist’s Fire to help them clear out a group of troublesome monsters that had settled outside of the city.
Devlin assisted the party on many jobs, gaining more and more experience and gaining new opportunities to test their creations out in the field. Soon enough they felt it was time to go legit and headed for the Glassfang Syndicate. There, Devlin hoped they would find the perfect environment to complete their current project, the one born from that spark of inspiration on that fateful day.
