The Fall of House Vrinn
Goēs was born into House Vrinn, a minor noble family in the treacherous Underdark city of Velkynvelve. The drow of House Vrinn were known for their mastery of shadow magic and their cunning in the deadly game of drow politics. However, their power was always precarious, and their downfall came swiftly when a rival house, House Zauvir, orchestrated a brutal coup. Goēs watched as his mother, Matron Vrinn, was executed in a public ritual of humiliation, and his house was obliterated.
Fleeing the Underdark with nothing but his wits and his innate magical talent, Goēs emerged onto the surface world, a place of blinding light and unfamiliar customs. He was met with suspicion and hostility, for the drow were feared and hated by surface dwellers. Goēs wandered aimlessly, a stranger in a strange land, until he found himself in the war-torn region of Krov's Eye. Krov's Eye: A Land of Ruin and Opportunity
Krov's Eye, named after the Magnelandish god of battle, spring, and passion, was a region scarred by the War of Three Dooms. Once a thriving agricultural hub and a retreat for the wealthy, it had been reduced to a desolate wasteland. The fortress of Pozarna was being rebuilt, and adventurers from across the Bazagonian Empire were flocking to the region, hoping to reclaim its lost glory.
Goēs, however, saw something else in Krov's Eye: a land ripe for destruction. The people here were desperate, clinging to false hope and the empty promises of their gods. To Goēs, they were weak, and their weakness disgusted him. It was here, amidst the ruins of Krov's Eye, that he first heard the whispers of Ordo Mortkap.
The Call of Ordo Mortkap
Ordo Mortkap was a secretive organization that preached the coming of an apocalypse, a cleansing fire that would purge the world of its corruption. They worshipped Gospodar, a mysterious entity who claimed to be the harbinger of this new world. Those who served Ordo Mortkap would be spared the flames and elevated to rulers of the ashes.
Goēs, disillusioned and embittered by his experiences, was drawn to the order's nihilistic philosophy. He sought out its members and was initiated into their ranks. In a dark ritual, he pledged his soul to Gospodar, gaining immense power in exchange for his loyalty. As a symbol of his devotion, he donned an iron mask, forever concealing his identity and severing his ties to his past. He also summoned Krix, a quasit familiar, to serve as his eyes and ears in the mortal world.
The Quest for Colonus
Goēs's first major mission for Ordo Mortkap was to locate Colonus, a powerful werebear who was said to possess a relic of great importance to Gospodar. The order believed that the relic could hasten the coming apocalypse. Goēs traveled to the remote reaches of Krov's Eye, following rumors of Colonus's whereabouts.
When he finally found the werebear, however, it was too late. Colonus was already dead, slain by adventurers who had stumbled upon his lair. All that remained was a single claw, which Goēs took as a trophy. He now wears the claw on a necklace, a grim reminder of his failure and the fleeting nature of life.
The Threat to Sister Eryel
Now, Goēs finds himself in the shadow of Pozarna Castle, where the local clergy have become a target of Ordo Mortkap's wrath. The sealed letter threatening Sister Eryel, the head priestess of the chapel, was his doing. The letter, attributed to Ordo Mortkap, called for the slaughter of the clergy and urged the people to seek the "Shrine of the Skull" to be spared from the coming apocalypse.
Goēs believes that the clergy, with their empty promises of salvation, are complicit in the world's corruption. By eliminating them, he hopes to sow fear and discord, hastening the collapse of the old world and paving the way for Gospodar's new order.
The Iron Mask and the Claw of Colonus
Goēs's iron mask is intricately engraved with symbols of death and rebirth, a testament to his devotion to Gospodar. It hides not only his face but also the doubts that linger in his heart. The claw of Colonus hangs from his neck, a constant reminder of his mission and the power he seeks. His long gloves and tattered cloak conceal his drow heritage, allowing him to move unnoticed among the people of Krov's Eye.
