ALARUM #11 — The Wheat Fields

Premise: The easiest money you’ve made all month.

A large farming operation outside Terrace needs a few additional bodies during harvest.

Not labourers.

Security.

The owner, Marcel Duvain, has had grain, tools, preserved food, and occasionally whole sacks of produce disappear during harvest season. He suspects his own workers are responsible and wants unfamiliar faces wandering the property.

The instructions are almost embarrassingly simple:

Watch the workers.
Watch the wagons.
Make sure nothing walks away that shouldn't.

The pay is good.

The weather is beautiful.

And at midday the Duvain family lays out enough food at the edge of the wheat to feed a small army.

Fresh bread. Roast chicken. Sausages. Cheese. Pickled vegetables. Apples. Butter. Honey. Cold beer.

For perhaps twenty minutes, adventuring seems like an extremely foolish way to make a living.

Then someone screams.
