Bernard Winchester was built as a hunting weapon, hunting assistant, and butler for the good natured but unwise Duke John Bigbooté. Winchester’s main function was to protect the Duke from his frequent overestimation of his own hunting prowess.
Duke Bigbooté loved two things: hunting and drinking,which he frequently did in great quantities and at the same time. Much to the disapproval of his family. During one hunting expedition, after finishing his 4th bottle of wine, the Duke decided to test his new blunderbuss on an unusually large tree near the base camp. Unfortunately for him it was actually a slumbering Oak Treant, which was not amused at being used for target practice. Before Winchester could react, the wine-fueled Duke charged the creature. He was promptly smashed into the forest floor, saving the remaining hunting party from the need to dig a grave. With the Duke's passing, his title and lands were bestowed upon the eldest Bigbooté. The family, not wanting to keep “the weapon" which failed to protect the late Duke, dismissed Bernard Winchester from their services to seek other employment, promising to provide a letter of recommendation which was never delivered. Winchester still insists it was simply lost in the mail…5 years later.
