Born to wandering ronin who survived from road to road beneath the Empire’s endless sky, Nikko was raised among inns, market stalls, travelers, and stories. He learned early how to read people, how to smile his way out of trouble, and how to find warmth even in uncertain places.
The Togashi took notice of him while he was still young. The details are unclear, as they often are with the Dragon. Some claim he crossed sacred mountain paths alone during winter. Others say he sat beside an injured monk for an entire night without fear or complaint. Whatever the truth, the monks brought him into their order, believing the mountains had already chosen him.
Life in the monastery was not an easy fit. Nikko struggled with rigid structure and solemn expectations, often earning frustration from his teachers for wandering where he should not, asking questions at the wrong time, or treating discipline with far too much ease. Yet beneath the irreverence was genuine understanding. He took naturally to meditation, philosophy, and the strange wisdom of the Togashi, even if he rarely approached them in expected ways.
Now tattooed among the Ise Zumi, Nikko walks the Empire as many Dragon monks do: wandering without clear destination, collecting experiences as readily as teachings. He is warm where others are guarded, casual where others are formal, and entirely too comfortable in his own skin for the liking of more traditional samurai. It is said he spends more nights beneath the roofs of strangers than beneath his own, though whether this speaks to his restless spirit or his fondness for companionship depends entirely on who is telling the story.
Beneath the easy smiles and relaxed manner, however, lies a monk who does take his path seriously, even if the shape of that path often leaves others uncertain whether he is enlightened, insane, or somehow both.
