Backstory – The Convict Monk
I was a novice monk raised in a monastery at the foot of a mountain. Since childhood, I was taught that everything in life follows the balance of nature—life and death, suffering and peace. When a deadly plague struck the nearby village, the elders refused to help, believing it was part of the natural order.
At first, I obeyed.
But as the villagers’ suffering worsened, I could no longer ignore their cries. In secret, I went down to the village and tried to heal them with traditional medicine and herbs from the mountain. The villagers placed their hope in me, but nothing I did worked. No remedy, no prayer, no herb could stop the plague.
The more I failed, the more desperate I became. I searched day and night for a cure until I was forced to accept the truth: the plague could not be healed.
The weight of that realization broke me.
Unable to bear their endless suffering, I convinced myself that the only mercy left was death. One by one, I ended the lives of those beyond saving so they would suffer no more.
Eventually, both the villagers and the monastery discovered what I had done. To them, it was murder. To me, it was mercy.
For my crime, I was sentenced to exile and banished to Wylderock Island, stripped of my home and my place in the monastery.
Now I walk as a convict, haunted by the people I failed to save, unsure whether I seek redemption… or punishment.
