Backstory
The first daughter of House Mizzrym-- and its most eccentric one to date.
Phaer'vrae Mizzrym was raised to become the future Matron Mother of her house. Her upbringing was typical for a noble drow: political intrigue, assassination attempts, combat training, and due to being from house Mizzrym-- lessons in diplomacy and trade. All of this was meant to secure their continued rise to power in Menzoberranzan.
Unfortunately, Phyre found most of it dreadfully boring. She was intelligent enough to grasp lessons quickly, but once she understood something, her interest vanished and she struggled to care about anything that failed to continually challenge her.
That changed during one of her mother's trade meetings, where Phyre encountered a group of duergar merchants showcasing their mechanical devices and inventions. While the adults discussed profits and agreements, she became fascinated by the craftsmanship behind their wares. How did the mechanisms work? Could they be made more efficient?
Thus began her obsession with artificing. She started dismantling devices, studying magical components, and creating inventions of her own. Her experiments frequently failed, malfunctioned, or exploded spectacularly, but every mistake taught her something new.
To Phyre, a broken invention wasn't a failure-- it was a prototype waiting to be improved. There was always something else to learn, another flaw to correct, another possibility to explore. For someone who had spent her life bored by predictability, she had finally found something that could keep her occupied.
Before long, Phyre began applying the same philosophy to herself. Following an assassination attempt that left her injured, she became fixated on the weaknesses of her own body. Her reflexes could be faster, her limbs stronger, and her flesh less vulnerable. If machines could be improved, why can't she? What began as an attempt to compensate for her injuries soon became a personal project in self-improvement. She experimented with mechanical prosthetics, gradually replacing parts of her body with metals and gears.
