John used to live in Eberron, they were born into a merchant family because of a union between a changeling and Harengon. John's Haregnon father was unaware that their lover and spouse of many years was a changeling, when this was later discovered, the changeling fled to the fey wild and was never seen again. Despite one of their parents leaving at a young age, John was still raised with love and understanding, the only issue being that they had to discover and learn all the facets of their changeling nature on their own.
John's fathers love for their spouse was so great that they would do anything to find them and get them back, spending all of the money in shady endeavours to track them down and travel to wherever they are. During one of these endeavours, a usable portal to the feywild was opened. Whether it be coincidence or fate, that was the day that everything changed, the day John's dragon mark appeared and they were sucked into or maybe cast into the portal and then the living hell began. When John awakened they were no longer as they once were, yes they were still a changeling but their base form had changed, morphed in a character of what they should be but that was not all. From being attacked by a flock of imps to being chased through a forest by dryads, assaults on John's mind, body were constant and unrelenting, being moved from place to place without warning from lava filled caves to boggy swamps. There seemed to be a pattern, a method to the madness, after each incident, after each trial they would be moved to a new place, after much time they determined that which was between One of the layers of hell and the feywild. The only reason they survived was because of the power of the Aberrant dragonmark which would increase and decrease with wild magic power when traversing the planes, wild magic the only constant in a world filled with lies. Later it would be discovered this was a sick game being played by a member of the fey court and a devil of avenues, to what end we will never know, but it needed to end.
One final challenge, one final trial to gain their freedom but as one last laugh to their suffering they had to give up all the power they accumulated for it was not actually theirs and that was the REAL test, then after all that instead of being home they was dropped off on the sword coast with nothing but the cloths on their backs a Greatsword and a pouch of coins for their trouble.
