Captured by a slave-trader at as an infant, and sold to a band of bandits, the boy lived in poor conditions throughout his childhood. He learned how to lie, steal, and kill through them. That is, until one day, a lone assassin single-handedly killed the entire camp in the middle of the night, granting him his freedom. The assassin took him under her protection, giving him a place to call home and taking nothing in return. For the next few months, the boy experienced bliss...
Of course, peace could never last. One day, the village they live in was attacked by a horde of undead. The assassin was away on another bounty, and so, the village was left undefended. One of the undead managed to catch up to him and the boy blacked out.
When the boy woke up, the boy saw that he was inexplicably the only survivor of the attack. The bodies of those who were kind to him littered the streets, torn into bloody pieces, and half-eaten by the horde. And so, the boy fled. He ran away from the village, from his home, only to stop when he heard something that shouldn't be heard here. Laughter.
As he investigated the source of the sound, fear and sorrow turned to burning rage as he found a necromancer, laughing in delight as his experiment was successful. The boy's anger grew. His home was destroyed, everyone he knew was dead, and for what? A measly experiment? The boy then saw the ritual dagger sheathed in the necromancer's hip and rage took over. If there's anything he knew, a knife to the throat would kill anyone if they didn't see it coming. The necromancer had no time to react as the boy took the knife and stabbed it through the necromancers throat, into the brain.
But the boy's rage wasn't satisfied. He stabbed the necromancer over and over again, sobbing and screaming... until something inside him broke, and as it did, the ritual was completed. Necrotic energy consumed the boy, infusing him with the very same ritual that the necromancer intended to use for himself. By the time it was done, the boy was a shadow of his former self, with only one mission in mind. To make sure that no one else would suffer like he did. And so, the boy took on a new name. Revenant.
During a certain quest commissioned by Irit, he found a blade that offered to take his necrotic powers and in exchange, grant him a different skillset. He's suspicious, of course, but desperation won over caution and the pact was made.
