Willow has a pet durian crab she calls Newton. This crab mistook Willow for a tree and climbed onto her head, hiding in her hair. No matter how many times she shook it off, it kept climbing back onto her so she eventually gave up and allowed it to stay.

Family
Willow is the only daughter of Heather Hawthorne, a former field medic now working as a village doctor. She trained Willow in magic and medicine as her apprentice. Willow has no father, as she was conceived asexually using magic. Because of this, Willow is genetically identical to her mother and looks like a younger version of her.
Leaving Home
Willow's village was affected by a deadly plague with no known treatment. In a matter of days, around half of the villagers were infected and quarantined. Willow's mother did everything she could to treat the infected but the constant exposure to them lead to her becoming sick as well. Willow decided to leave the village to complete her medical training and research the disease, hoping to find some kind of treatment or cure. The other villagers objected, insisting that they needed her now more than ever as the only other experienced doctor in the village. Willow ignored them and left anyway, promising to return with a way to save everyone.
Reaching the Refuge
After 4 years of travelling, Willow visited many medical practitioners, libraries and schools of medicine but she never felt like she was getting any closer to her goal. She knows at this point that, even if she did find a cure, it would almost certainly be too late to save anyone from her village. Scared to return home and find out the fate of her fellow villagers, Willow searched for somewhere where she could distract herself and forget about her old life. Eventually, she stumbled across the refuge and volunteered her medical services in exchange for a place to stay.
