The shadows in the corner of the office didn't just lengthen; they detached. They pulled away from the cold stone walls, twisting and weaving into the towering, vague silhouette of a man. From the depth of the hood, empty sockets wept liquid darkness, and the writhing tendrils of his form brushed against the edges of the desk, snuffing out the peripheral light.
"The blood was drank," Nyx whispered, his voice echoing from everywhere and nowhere at once. "The experiment exposed. The plans are unraveling."
The Lord of Shadows loomed over the desk, the weeping masks stitched into his cloak shifting in silent, writhing agony. "Have you given them a purpose yet, old friend? Have you given them a single reason to remain in the Vale?"
The occupant of the desk didn't flinch. He slowly set down his quill, the blue energy crackling along his brow flaring slightly against the encroaching dark. He looked up, a sharp, cold smirk playing on his lips.
"Shade. You were always so famously silent when we sat upon the Council," the man remarked, leaning back in his carved chair. "Why so talkative now?"
"Because the stakes have changed... Xylos."
The smirk vanished instantly. The blue glow in the man's eyes hardened into icy shards, and he leaned forward, his voice dropping to a harsh, urgent hiss.
"Do not use that name. I am the Stranger now, and I will continue to be the Stranger. The past is buried, and it stays that way." He glanced instinctively toward the high, dark corners of the ceiling. "He has ears and eyes everywhere, Shade. Remember where we are."
"Fine," Nyx conceded, the shadows around him rippling with low, agitated waves. "But the future will not wait. The Gravebound must rise again, whether you are ready or not. Aethelgard stands ready to be claimed—that ancient pile of rough stone, patched together with ribbons of black obsidian. It waits for a master."
Nyx leaned closer, the ink-like tendrils of his cloak spilling across the paperwork, obscuring the text. "Already, Shinikaba uses the gifts you granted to carve out land in the Vale. Meanwhile, Ryum and Yama venture off into strange, distant domains. You see something in December. Keeping her alive... you know what is at stake. Bony Alice can offer this land so much power. Silas could become the next Well—"
"Never say that name here!" The Stranger slammed a gauntleted hand onto the stone desk, cutting Nyx off with absolute finality. The blue light from his eyes flared violently. "He will know. And if He hears, we will be the ones forced to explain."
A heavy, suffocating silence fell over the room. Nyx’s form drifted back an inch, the masks on his cloak going perfectly still before resuming their slow, agonizing shift.
"Yes... yes," Nyx murmured quietly, acknowledging the danger. "But the fact remains. They are scattering. You must forge them into a single unit. Give Douxel Vale a Ludis or a place to call home. You never understood that adventure need a reason to stay here before they drift completely beyond your reach."
The Stranger rose slowly from his seat, his dark armor catching the faint, eerie light of the desk's glowing crystals. He rested his hands on the stone surface, staring directly into the terrifying abyss of Nyx's hood.
"Shade, I have plans in motion that your mind cannot fathom," the Stranger said, his voice dropping back down to a dangerous, resonant calm. "But if it is a rallying cry they need... so be it. Let us take back Aethelgard. Let the Gravebound rise again."
