Gherkin is a stout 5 foot with an aged face. Over the years Gherkin has learned how to groom himself to look like a dwarf from a distance. Up close you can see that what look like gray eye brows and beard is actually mycelium, his wrinkly nose is a morel, and even his pale skin is spongy. It looks like he is wearing a lichen ghillie suit with a mushroom hat but these are adaptations he has grown to help protect him from the sun. While he looks old he is actually young for a fungril, 126 years old.

Gherkin hails from an underground fungril community Tlazolli. His people were dedicated to the cycle of life, especially the decomposition of once living things. After a failed attempt to decompose some wine, Gherkin stumbled upon preserving. He had an immediate fascination with preserving, preventing the very thing his people cherished. While the people of Tlazolli were generally accepting, there was no one who shared in his fascination. He left to find more people who share his love of salt, vinegar, and oils.
