A West Marches Campaign in Gobli’verl
THE ISLAND
Far to the west of the continent of Gobli’verl, beyond the usual trade winds and charted sea routes, lies a newly revealed island once believed to be myth.
Old elven charts called it the Land of the West, a final refuge where the elves withdrew as their kingdoms fell. For thousands of years it was hidden by powerful magic. Storms turned ships aside. Compasses failed. Magic blurred.
Recently, that protection collapsed.
Now the island is reachable.
What You Know
The island is tropical and equatorial, lush, warm, and dangerous.
It is large, roughly 32,000 square miles, about the size of Hokkaido on earth.
Dense jungle covers much of the interior.
Ancient ruins are visible from the coast.
Powerful magic and lost technology still linger.
Goblins have already begun landing, establishing a frontier port and sending expeditions inland in search of artifacts, rare metals, and ark-aether resources.
You are part of that rush.
---
THE FRONTIER
There is one established settlement, a rough goblin-built port known as The Breakwater. It serves as the staging point for all expeditions.
Beyond it:
No law is guaranteed
No map is complete
No area is safe
Everything inland must be discovered, mapped, named, and survived.
---
STYLE OF PLAY: WEST MARCHES
This campaign uses a West Marches structure.
That means:
There is no single main story
The world does not scale to your level
Exploration drives play
Danger is real and permanent
The map changes based on player actions
You choose where to go.
You choose when to go.
You choose who goes with you.
The island exists whether you are there or not.
Sessions Are Expeditions
Each session represents a single expedition into the island.
You start at The Breakwater
You travel, explore, fight, negotiate, or flee
You return if you survive
If you do not return, the island keeps you.
---
ROTATING GAME MASTERS
This is a rotating-GM campaign.
There is no single permanent DM.
How It Works
Multiple DMs run games in the same shared world
Each DM claims a region of the island
That DM becomes the primary storyteller and caretaker for that area
Their locations, NPCs, factions, and consequences persist
If you explore a region under one DM, it remains changed for everyone.
What This Means for Players
Different tones and dangers in different regions
Consistent geography, but varied storytelling
Discoveries made by one group affect all groups
You may revisit areas run by different DMs later
---
CHARACTER EXPECTATIONS
This is not a heroic fantasy playground.
Characters should:
Want something badly
Be willing to take risks
Understand that retreat is success
Expect moral gray, not clean answers
Failure is possible.
Deaths are expected.
Survival is an achievement.
Replacement characters are a best practice.
---
DISCOVERY AND OWNERSHIP
Players are encouraged to:
Name landmarks
Mark routes
Spread rumors
Lie about dangers
Compete with rival crews
The map you see is incomplete on purpose.
The truth is earned.
---
WHAT THIS CAMPAIGN IS ABOUT
Ruins abandoned by the gods
Desecration is progress.
You are strangers in this land, and it wants to kill you
Powers that should not still exist
What happens when immortality is abandoned
This is not about saving the island.
It is about what you take from it, and what it takes from you.
---
FINAL WORD
The island does not care who you are.
It remembers everything you do.
Welcome to The Godless West.
