Rafferty grew up on a farm that embraced communal living and spiritualism through the use of hallucinogens. He was apprenticed to the farm's master distiller, and he expected his life to revolve around brewing lagers and whiskeys. On the eve of his 19th birthday, however, he had a strange vision that culminated in a burst of unnatural blue fire that could singe or soothe.

He decided to leave his home to find the source of this strange gift. Since then, he has made his way as a vagabond sorcerer helping those in need and searching for clues about the nature of spellfire.
