Kibbel Havenflare is a 4’02” silver dragonwrought kobold, 197 years of age in the current day. He possesses an easygoing attitude with a complementary aloofness that often makes communicating with others an often strenuous effort. Although Kibbel is generally carefree, stoic, and lacks a great deal of tact in social environments, he has a number of emotionally sensitive traits. He is easily embarrassed by the often-present deficiencies in his speech patterns and especially those found in his magic forms, such as unnatural colors or cosmetic flaws, which he considers a common error for inexperienced magic practitioners. He is also strongly sensitive to his relatively diminutive height and holds fast, yet largely superfluous, grudges against those that point it out. Moreover, he is capable of throwing tantrums that last from hours to days in duration, often when prevented from interacting with magical objects or other interests that pique his curiosity, and more seldom when forced to behave in a particular way in social environments. Kibbel is also easily bribed by food, most notably sweets, and they serve as the most effective motivator to get him to do work, even if begrudgingly or self-consciously. He also possesses a bad habit of ignoring terms of commitment to others, often involving noncommittal acceptance in performing a task with little reward — a trait which lends well to his distaste of devils and other contractually-binding creatures.
In his formative years, Kibbel Havenflare was the single dragonwrought kobold of an uncountably numerous number of kobolds in service to Zephyiidris, the Solar Smite — a gold dragon with a knight-esque calling to righteousness and warfare in the name of their ideals. In his pursuits, Zephyiidris would often depart from his lair to engage in humanoid-borne conflicts with a disguised form, leaving the maintenance and lesser defense of his territory to his servicing kobold warren until his return. Kibbel’s unique status gave him overarching command of the lair and warren’s function in these periods of his master’s absence, with which he dedicated every moment to the expansion of Zephyiidris’ territorial boundaries in emulation of the dragon’s behavior: raiding parties against neighboring humanoid settlements, excavation and usurping of underground-dwelling burrows, and the extortion of conventional trading posts for through-going supplies, all in a bid to impose the Solar Smite’s influence on the surrounding environs.
Though Zephyiidris found immense satisfaction and pride in these endeavors in his name, (to the point of granting Kibbel his name directly, whereas all other kobolds are traditionally named by the collective warren) he also came to realize Kibbel’s inherently aggressive and imposing nature as disruptive to his place in the social dynamics of the kobolds’ collective, primarily on account of his directly-descended dragon blood. In an effort to reign in these violent tendencies, Zephyiidris would frequently place a willing Kibbel under the effect of a Charm spell during times of recuperation and nonintervention that largely suppressed his violent drive for imposing his will onto others.
On one particular excursion, the dragon departed his hoard to participate in a long-going war, leaving his lair without its master for several years. In his absence, Kibbel organized the lair inhabitants into an enduring conquest to push Zephyiidris’ lair beyond regional boundaries, initiating a long-lasting conquest against various yet-unclaimed landmarks. This event, however, incited an aggressive response from the followers of Tiamat within the Cult of Dragons, who recognized the drastic expansion of a metallic dragon’s lair and wished to see its end. The response resulted in a savage conflict between the heavily populated kobold warren and subjugated humanoid settlements and the local forces of the Cult of Dragons — a conflict which ultimately resulted in the barest repelling of Tiamat’s followers, though at the expense of the extreme reduction in the numbers of the defending kobolds and drastic shrinking of the pushed territorial reach.
Shamed by the consequences of his rash action and needless fatalities suffered under his command, Kibbel took leave of the warren and lair, invoking an act of self-banishment in which he would thereafter commit his life to the goal of attaining the measure of self-control, impulse stability, and internal balance through the attaining wisdom in worldly concepts and practice, one day to be capable of confronting Zephyiidris again with a greater cognitive capacity and understanding of the world, as well as to challenge the dragon in even, noble combat to prove his achieved worth and power tempered with responsibility in its use. In search of this objective, Kibbel journeyed to a monastery dedicated to the service of the god Ilmater, the Suffering God, termed the Monastery of the Yellow Rose. Through several years in their grace, toiling under the barest necessities of life and reliance upon the sole providence of the land under poverty and nonmaterialism, the kobold was unable to entirely suppress his violent and militaristically-inclined urges under the monastic teachings. However, Kibbel became capable of more easily harnessing and funneling his urges through an alternative change brought about by his introspective training; the facsimile of natural draconic sorcery running through his blood, presenting the kobold with a constant goal to strive for, struggle against, and harness.
Now with a manageable, if uncertain, capacity for controlling and manifesting his imposing qualities at appropriate measures, Kibbel’s new goal rests in operating alongside others in a more active, sociable capacity; achieving a greater insight into the values of the collective over the individual.
