BACKGROUND
Hanabi was born upon the road, beneath the shifting skies of the Unicorn lands. Her father, Ide Ichigo, was a samurai and merchant of the Ide family — a respected caravan leader who had traded the comfort of status for the wealth and reputation of his clan. Her mother, Katsumi, was the commander of an ashigaru company, a woman of strong will and striking presence.
Their paths crossed when a young Moto samurai assigned Katsumi to guard Ichigo’s caravan. As the journey unfolded, affection grew between them — quiet at first, yet undeniably deep. Both knew such a union was forbidden, but fate has a way of bending rules written by men.
Near the borderlands, their caravan was attacked by fierce nomads. Katsumi fought like a storm given form, her blade flashing through the dust. More than once, she saved both her master and Ichigo from certain death. After the battle, as songs of mourning and victory filled the camp, Ichigo used every ounce of his wit — and more than a few bottles of sake — to convince the young Moto to adopt Katsumi into his house.
When the caravan returned home, Katsumi was welcomed by his former master's family as one of their own. That same day, Ichigo asked for her hand. It was a marriage born of love, and thus a fortunate one, blessed with a single daughter: Hanabi.
Hanabi grew up among tents, merchants, and the endless paths of the open road. From her mother, she inherited a powerful stature and unwavering confidence; from her father, a sharp mind and an instinct for good business.
Unwilling to choose between her parents’ two worlds — the court and the battlefield — she found her own path by joining the Utaku Silent Shadow school, a place where discipline met subtlety. Though her rank was modest, she quickly earned notice for her keen sense of trade and her commanding presence.
In time, she met Abdul al-Azred, a learned man from Al-Zawira and the quiet leader of a great caravan connecting Rokugan and the western sands. The old sage saw promise in her curiosity, and she became his unofficial student. He taught her of trade routes, diplomacy, and the balance between wealth and wisdom — lessons she absorbed more naturally than any text or scroll.
As the years passed, Hanabi developed a taste for the finery of the artisans’ quarters — the scent of dyed silk, the shimmer of gold thread, the intricate lines of lacquer and embroidery. Beneath her reserved demeanor, she carried the same love of beauty her father had once displayed so proudly.
Years passed. She traveled beside diplomats of modest rank, ever faithful, though her connection to a gaijin tarnished her standing among the Unicorn. For a time, she found companionship with Scorpion courtiers — subtle, elegant, dangerous — whose craft fascinated her, though she never sought to imitate it.
Then her daimyō summoned her personally, bringing her into his service. Her new duty was clear: to protect and advance the Unicorn’s commercial interests in the City of the Rich Frog.
Hanabi accepted without hesitation, her heart steady. This was more than an assignment — it was her chance to honor her family’s name and carry their banner forward along the ever-changing roads of destiny.
DESCRIPTION
Hanabi is a woman in the twilight of her twenties. Her eyes and hair are deep as obsidian, their darkness set against skin just a shade warmer than that of most Rokugani — a contrast she often softens with carefully applied makeup to brighten her face.
From her mother, she inherited both height and strength, standing a head above most women and even many men of her age. It gives her a presence that commands attention without trying.
Her long hair is rarely seen loose; she keeps it drawn into a flawless bun, secured with an ornate comb chosen from her personal collection — a collection she expands with quiet delight whenever opportunity arises.
You are most likely to find her in the Indigo Market, speaking with merchants, chastising a would-be thief, or settling a dispute between traders with calm firmness.
Whether wrapped in fine kimono or clad in lacquered armor, Hanabi never fades into the crowd. Words are rarely needed: her composure and towering grace make it clear she is not one to be underestimated — neither on the battlefield, nor in the courts of the Empire.
