Rank and Renown: Vox Populi
By gaining renown as a figurehead of the Vox Populi, you advance in the eyes of the common people. Promotion doesn't come from a military commander, but from the word of mouth, taverns, street corners, and high-society gossip. Advancement is granted for grand public gestures, exposing the corrupt elite, and championing the collective will.
Rank 1: Rising Voice
Prerequisite: Renown 3 or higher
Your specific title depends on how your reputation manifests in the streets:
- If you are a street orator or political instigator, you assume the title of Firebrand.
- If you are an artist, performer, or poet of the people, you become a Troubadour.
- If you are a renowned local altruist or folk hero, you become a Patron of the Commons.
- If you are a ruthless rumor-monger, extortionist, or local menace, you become a Whisper of Dread.
As a Rising Voice, your face is recognizable in local neighborhoods. You can call on a commoner (use the standard commoner stat block) who is either a massive fan of yours or thoroughly intimidated by you to perform mundane errands, stand in lines for you, or deliver messages. They will happily help their idol or comply out of fear for their own safety, but they won't fight for you.
Between adventures, your public reputation ensures your basic needs are met. The adoring public refuses to let you pay, or local business owners are too intimidated to charge you, providing you with free room and board that supports you at a modest lifestyle.
Rank 2: Public Icon
Prerequisite: Renown 10 or higher
Your name is now known city-wide. Merchants use your likeness or pay you protection tokens, and your presence draws an immediate reaction:
- If you are a firebrand, you become a Tribune, capable of swaying local assemblies.
- If you are a troubadour, you become a Virtuoso, whose art can shift the cultural mood of a district.
- If you are a patron, you become a Folk Champion, protected by the unyielding loyalty of the working class.
- If you are a whisper of dread, you become a Shadow Broker, a respected criminal element capable of silencing local gossip or leveraging dirty secrets.
You are a master of public spaces. At the start of a social endeavor or investigation, your reputation allows you to secure the assistance of a squad of 1d4 commoners (acting as a supportive hype crew or a coerced crowd of lookouts) plus one bard, spy, or thug (acting as a publicist, an ear-on-the-street, or a personal shadow). These individuals remain with you to boost your image, enforce your presence, or cause distractions until the event ends.
Between adventures, tavern owners, merchants, and local guilds compete for your endorsement—or pay you handsome tributes to keep your malice away from their shops. Their gifts and hospitality easily support you at a comfortable lifestyle for free.
Rank 3: Living Legend
Prerequisite: Renown 25 or higher
Your reputation has transcended the streets; even the nobility and rulers cannot ignore you without sparking a public outcry or a massive wave of panic.
- If your interests lie in political disruption, you become a Grand Demagogue. You can easily incite a massive public protest, strike, or chaotic city-wide panic that completely gridlocks a city district, effectively shutting down local commerce or cutting off a political rival’s access to their estate without breaking a single law.
- If your interests lie in high society, you become a Cultural Darling. You are given a permanent retinue of two sycophantic nobles who fawn over you and act as your social sponsors, granting you immediate access to exclusive galas, royal courts, and restricted archives just because you are the "it" person of the era.
- If your interests lie in absolute social leverage and intimidation, you become a Dread Architect. You have acquired so much leverage that two corrupt or terrified nobles act as your permanent political puppets. They will sponsor you into restricted areas, sign official decrees on your behalf, or grant you access to secret vaults just to keep their own dark secrets or their families safe from your wrath.
Between adventures, wealthy patrons throw money, estates, and luxury at you—either to be associated with your legendary name or to buy your silence and protection—allowing you to live a wealthy lifestyle at no cost to yourself.
Rank 4: The Voice or The Terror of the Era
Prerequisite: Renown 50 or higher
You are no longer just famous or infamous; you are an untouchable cultural institution or a living myth. Your words can shape the future of kingdoms, and you are universally recognised by the masses.
Depending on your path, you gain one of the following variations of the final traits:
- Shield of the Masses / Shadow of Retaliation: Once per week, if a political rival, corrupt noble, or state authority attempts to legally arrest, exile, or publicly harm you or your companions within a major settlement, you can invoke your status. If you are loved, hundreds of adoring citizens instantly form a massive human shield to block the authorities. If you are feared, you calmly lay out exactly how catastrophically you will ruin the city's infrastructure, unleash your hidden networks, or expose the rulers' darkest secrets if harmed. In either case, the authorities are forced to back down to avoid either a civilian riot or systemic collapse, leaving them completely toothless.
- Grand Audience / Ominous Mandate: Any ruler, emperor, or high council must grant you and your party a private meeting within 24 hours of your request. If you are loved, they grant it respectfully because denying the "Voice of the People" would risk destabilizing their regime. If you are feared, they grant it instantly out of sheer terror of what you will do to their reputation, their secrets, or their courts if they refuse to open the door.
