His motivation is to become stronger and braver before reuniting with The Flock. He also wants to slay the red dragon Peralta to avenge his fallen teachers.
He is in fact afraid to rejoin The Flock as he's afraid they might resent him for causing the disaster
He is good-hearted and loyal, but is often nervous and indecisive.
Backstory:
The Flock was a party of Aarakocra rangers who swore to keep the balance between the earth and the sky in check. They roamed the skies of Entia and hunted those who attempted to disturb the peace between the two domains -- more often than not avian beasts mingling with a village.
The Flock saved a three-week old Robin from a manticore who killed his parents and raised him as their own, teaching him the ways of a ranger -- everything from holding a bow to handling wild beasts. A quick learner, he showed great promise as a ranger, but he had one unfortunate habit holding him down -- he completely froze every-time he came face-to-face with a beast larger than him. His mentor, Levy, was forgiving, but this habit would end up costing him everything one night.
2 years and 5 months after being saved by The Flock, Robin was lying on a log near a campfire, gazing at the starry night sky. It had been a busy day -- day 2 of searching for Peralta the red dragon, who had committed multiple terrible acts against earth-kind. They followed her trail for hours and hours, only to run cold, so they decided to call it a day. While others sang and laughed, his anxiety kept him alert the entire time.
He heard a heavy rustling in the bushes beside him. He stared at the bushes. The rustling got louder. Robin turned towards the others-- they could not hear the rustling. He turned back to the bushes. The rustling stopped. Relief started flooding his head, but it was misplaced as moments later a giant beast flashing red furiously charged out of the bushes. "Fools! You really thought you could follow me without me noticing?" Peralta shouted mockingly. She started to wreak havoc on the flock. Chaos ensued. After sweeping the area with a burst of flame, Peralta glanced down to see Robin, once again completely paralyzed and stuck to the ground. His mind was drowned out by heavy breathing and tinnitus. Peralta raised her talon in order to kill Robin in one quick blow.
