Doubt was born in Hells and lived her entire life in Ashenville. She worked for the wardens, tracking down rumors about debtors and escaped prisoners. While employed there, she befriended a warden lieutenant who asked her for help. The lieutenant owed a favor to a Soul Broker but was unable to repay it.

Doubt agreed to sign a contract with the Soul Broker and steal an artifact from another Soul Broker's collection. However, when Doubt and the lieutenant attempted to carry out this mission, Doubt was caught and imprisoned. Luckily, the warden managed to escape unnoticed.

While Doubt was imprisoned, she was tortured by a particularly cruel chain devil who believed a prophecy foretold her killing him. Another prisoner died protecting her.
