Warden ‘Slash’ Robitaille grew up an orphan in the small village of Hanniger deep within the Sablewood forests. Due to disfigurements in his face, the village children constantly tormented him, often forcing a carved pumpkin over his head. He was taken in by a kindly old katari named Loomis who lived in the edge of the village. The old man worked as the local butcher for Hanniger and neighboring villages; he began teaching Warden how to use blades and work the meat. Warden stayed hidden inside practicing with the knives and learning about the outside world from books the old katari brought him.
After many years, the Loomis died and Warden was forced to fend for himself, venturing out only after dark and donning an orange mask to hide his face.
When a series of murders began at the nearby Crystal Lake, Warden was immediately suspended. He was tracked down and attacked by a young woman named Angela. Angela believed Warden was a Slasher, an extremely violent type of undead consumed by murderous rage. Before Angela could kill Warden the real killer appeared, forcing the pair to work together to survive.
Warden decided to travel with Angela, hunting Slashers across and beyond the Gi'Gabi Coast. Over the years, they destroyed several Slashers and recorded the information they uncovered in a notebook.
Eventually, they learned the Slashers were the creations of a secret society called the Black Lantern. While trying to infiltrate the society to discover the reason for creating Slashers, Angela was killed by the society's leader Savini. Her last act was to entrust the notebook to Warden, telling him to find people who would take care of him and help him protect others.
Warden made his way to the City of Ghee, hoping the Laurel League could be the group who could fulfill Angela's dying request.
