Dirtwater sits in a lonely stretch of landlocked terrain. It's not all desert; nearby you'll find mountain lakes, a river, some rolling hills that are not inhospitable to farming. But if you look in any direction your eyes either slip skyward, or remain grounded and earth-bound. Peering towards the South, the horizon is dust, not surf. Sure, a few settlements lie a day or two away, there's even the city of Gradient out in the Prism Plains. Some have heard rumors of remote Fey enclaves tucked behind errant portals. But for generations, the rhythm here has been desert caravans, or well-funded archaelogical expeditions, not merchant ships. No one in Dirtwater has ever smelled salt on the wind.
That might be about to change.
A newly uncovered tunnel in the nearby mountains leads somewhere impossible: a cavern so vast it holds a hidden sea. Word of the discovery is spreading fast — helped along by the sudden appearance (and just as sudden disappearance) of a weather‑beaten sailor with a wooden leg and a parrot perched on his shoulder. He staggered into the Muddy Waters Tavern, muttered about “lights in the deep,” and vanished before dawn.
Now the town is buzzing.
Are the tunnel and the sailor connected?
What lies across that underground waterline?
And who better than Dirtwater’s adventurers to find out?
Exploration of the subterranean sea isn’t just an opportunity — it’s an invitation.
