Melissa spent most her childhood in a home that was less than kind which led her to lash out and get herself involved in places she should have kept away from. It was because of this that Professor Pendulum found her and took her under his wing. She proved to be the perfect amount of angry and broken to experiment with. Through the use of magic he was able to give her the power to transform and bend metal to her will. (Magical girl shenanigans ftw) Given she had not known any better, he was easily able to manipulate her into acting alongside his evil deeds. His goal was to steal strong emotions from people and use them as fuel for his own machinations. This would of course leave the people targeted empty shells of their former selves, unfeeling creatures. He told her this was a good thing- no one would suffer as she had.

In a fight against Auroriel, known magical girl heroine, Professor Pendulum intended to use Melissa as sacrifice to complete his work. Much to his and Melissa's surprise, Auroriel acted bravely and saved Melissa while destroying the professor's machine. Unfortunately, this left the heroine at death's door. Faced with the realization that the professor was not who he said he was and with the weight of Auroriel's sacrifice, Melissa decided she would do her best to do good. This began with helping Auroriel the best she could. After having spent the better part of a year by the heroine's side, Melissa decided to take on the name Gearheart and become someone who was worth Auroriel's sacrifice. This would lead her to Eclipse Academy.
