Hanako was born on a small island that spends its time unbound from the realms standard islands, an irregular one that spends its time moving around the lands on the winds that push it in whatever direction they please. One day, a very young shifter found her island colliding with another, strange, monolithic island.
Being the inquisitive cub she was, she made her way over towards the island, dropping down a short distance and exploring this vast island. It was an abandoned city of some kind, ornate masonry building on vast swaths of land, abandoned, desolate, empty. There was no life, not even rodents or bugs. She wanders alone exploring the land till dusk reclaimed the sky once more. Making her way back to where she was, she founds that her former land she once called home had slowly drifted away.
Hanako spent time screaming, crying in an attempt for help, but nothing happened... no help came. She slept under the stars, looking up at the empty sky, crying and hungry. The next day comes and she begins to explore the land further, desperately looking for food or anyone else to help her. The day turns into night once more and she collapses from exhaustion. She passes out and looks up at the sky as the moon shines down on the island. Looking up, she notices a glint coming off a nearby building. Using every last strength she had she drags herself over towards this building. Crawling through the destroyed front door, she sees a single tree grown and alive inside this vast library. A tree bearing the gift of life and food. She stands up, wobbling, and brings herself to the tree. She finds a fallen fruit on the floor and eats it, with a tear in her eye.
Over the next half a year, she spends time learning about the contents of the library. She understand some basic magic and the doctrine of the moon. She finds some cards which apparently were used for healing and fortune telling. Exploring the island more, she finds a small work-shop like building with ancient flying vessels of sort.
After learning what she can, she takes some books, clothes and the knowledge granted to her and ventures forth in search of home. Using the magic she learned, she was able to travel from island to island with the knowledge of the stars and the earth. For years and years she flies and learns about the world until one day... she finds people... other people...
