He is cursed to serve Selune as her blade in the dark, her dark retribution, so that the innocent may live in peace. The moonlight shines brighter against the surrounding... darkness...

He was once in training as a junior member of the Shadowmasters' guild, mainly as a lookout and sneak-thief. He was tasked with an ambitious theft as a trial for promotion within the guild, but it went wrong and he killed the mark, who it turned out was a cleric of Selune on secret pilgrimage, with a holy relic. Selune spoke directly to Nawk, commanding him to deliver the relic (which was the item the guild wanted stolen for an undisclosed client) to safety. Nawk did so and tried to hide from the guild while he decided what to do, but they found him the next day. For the falure in the theft and the messy kill, meaning the guild didn't know and couldn't find out what happened to the item, Nawk was held to be judged by the guildmasters. He believed they would execute him, so he managed to escape and has hidden from them ever since. They were only going to exile him, but used the rumours of execution to enforce obedience within the guild and to make sure exiles kept well away from guild business.

Nawk was therefore in Baldur's gate, hiding from the Shadowmasters and following Selune's continued instructions, when the Nautiloids abducted him and many others.
