In Vye, you're able to run a business whenever you'd like! A few additions have been homebrewed to make it more interesting, including Sidekick classes specifically designed to be employees for use.
When creating a Business Owner character, you can create a character as normal. However, you will be able to trade your starting equipment and starting money for custom, relevant equipment and starting funds. To do this, create your character sheet without these things, and detail in your notes to GM what you'd like your business to be. They will be in touch to arrange your beginning setup.
When running a business, you will likely have to pay tax. This varies greatly depending on the nature of your business.
You will be taxed for the products or services you provide. You will also be taxed for simply operating a business. This is called a Daily Operations Tax, generally 0.5% of your profits per day.
If you are purchasing goods imported into the city from outside of Greater Mereta, you will also be charged an Imported Goods tax of 0.2% per purchase. If you purchase something from outside of Greater Mereta that you then have imported in, you will have to pay the Imported Goods tax of 0.2% and the Imported Cargo tax of 2%.
The Imported Goods tax applies to the products you purchase. The Imported Cargo tax applies to the transportation service, for example the cargo shipment or carriage shipment, you hire.
Finally, if you own the property you operate your business from, you will have to pay a Place of Business Tax. This is 2% of your monthly profits from this property. If you rent a property you are using for your business, you do not have to pay this tax, as the landlord is taxed from the rent they charge you.
It is important to remember, as a player you do not have to pay tax in character. It is illegal, and you may be investigated by a Tax Collector from the Censors Office and fined even more - and potentially charged in court. It is safer to pay tax, but you are able to operate an illegal business if you wish.
It may also be worth hiring an Accountant to manage your expenses for you. They may even be able to find occassional loopholes and funding benefits for your business through their level perks. You can hire a permenant Accountant on your staff, or you can hire the single use service of one.
You are able to hire employees as either permenant staff or single use service. You can choose how to pay permenant staff and the general conditions of their contract, if you wish to provide them one. This can include a monthly salary, or a daily work contracted payment. For single use service, you pay a one off fee for an agreed upon service.
You can check out the Sidekick classes by looking at the homebrew for Employee Sidekicks.
If you'd like to play as one of these classes, you are also able to from standard sidekick classes.
The Traders Guild provides assistance in a variety of manners. They can help you find employees, provides discounted single-use employee services and can provide investment in new enterprises. Alongside this, they have a strict ettiquite to maintain respectable trading standards within the city, protecting your business from ill-practice. They also setup events and opportunities to branch into new markets and reach new clients/customers.
For more information, see the page on the Traders Guild.
You can arrange a session with a GM as normal to operating your business. During this time, you are able to make changes to how your business operates. This may alter your income during downtime.
Outside of active sessions, your business will enter downtime. Standard set out operations can take place during this time. This occurs under the assumption that you or your employees are running the business when outside of sessions. Your profits will be added to your character automatically at the end of the month unless otherwise agreed.
