The Mages Guild of Vye is unique in being the only mages guild in the entirety of Greater Mereta, and one of only four in Lunas.
The Guild is led by the Heads, the leading casters/professors of each field they approve the study and use of. On more significant matters, they convene to vote.
However, their leadership is tempered by the UGW, or Union of Garfalo the Wise. All members of the guild may join the Union, which then elects representatives for each rank and school.
Beyond this, each school has three branches: Study, Discover and Apply.
This branch within each school devote themselves to the theoritical and historical study of their chosen magical focus. Elevating understanding is their ambition above all else.
The highest ranks within this branch are the Academics. Each academic has achieved the rank through the honour bestowed by their head of field.
Following this, an Academic can choose as many or as few Aides as they wish. Those of this rank assist the work of the Academics.
Academics can also sponsour Researchers, giving official authorisation and resources to those of this rank to push forward with their own studies and research.
Prior to any of these ranks come the Students, the entry point into this branch. Those in this rank study under the various Academics until being bestowed their own higher rank of Aide or Researcher.
From this branch comes those who seek to break new ground in the use and calling of magic. Whether it is developing new spells or applications of magic, they bridge the gap between Study and Apply by studying to apply in new ways.
At the top of this branch are the Experimentalists. This rank is granted with an effective free pass to experiment with magic beyond any laws or restrictions placed by the Mages Guild. While they still must answer to the Heads, they do not need prior approval. This rank is perhaps the ultimate display of trust before election to the Heads. Despite this, there is rarely talk of making an Experimentalist a Head, due to the inherent stigma against their erratic and unpredictable natures.
They cannot, however, do all the work themselves. As such, Experimentalists may choose up to six Apprentices. These specifically focus in assisting the work of the Experamentalist, alongside using the work as a way to develop skills for their own work.
Those who show promise may also be chosen as an Experimentalist to be one of their two Pioneers. Those of this rank are set specific guidelines and restrictions for their own experiments and development, and must answer directly to their sponsor. However, they are permitted to work independently.
The Apply Branch is the practical and established application of magic. This is perhaps the largest membership of the Guild, but still has their own recognition and ranks within.
The top ranking members in the Apply branch are given the role of Practitioner, which is to say they have been deemed qualified to represent the Mages Guild when using magic in practical application. It is effectively a qualification that grants them a better reputation both within and outside of the Guild.
Below Practitioners are general members of the Guild, also known simply as Casters. These are members who are not Students and have not been granted the authorisation of the Discover branch. They are bound by the guidelines of the guild, but can also use the resources of the guild to find suitable work.
