Standing at a stout three feet and four inches tall, Orion Malanis carries fifty-five pounds of bulk, giving him an unusually broad-shouldered build for a wizard. He is a bald Deep Gnome with slate-grey skin and pale green eyes resting beneath heavy, bushy brows. Along the ridge of one pointed ear, he wears three small silver studs. Though he dresses in simple robes and carries the components of a spellcaster, his posture is that of a gnome who has spent his life doing hard labor. This is most obvious by his hands, which are rough, calloused, and tipped with jagged, broken fingernails. Those who watch him closely might notice some peculiar habits: he actively avoids letting anyone stand too close to him, and when deep in thought or frustrated, he traces the shapes on his palms, arms, or nearby surfaces.
If you ask around Underhaven about Orion, his past is easy to find. Orion was born and raised in the sanctuary of the city, where he had spent most of his life working alongside his father and brother in the local mines. However, years ago a mineshaft collapse claimed their lives, leaving him and his mother in greiving. It wasnt long until his mother wandered off into the depths of the underground, disappearing entirely. Following these losses, Orion left mining behind and shifed his focus to the studying of magic and translation of ancient texts. Today most know him as a hardworking scholar of many tongues and with a passion for ancient tomes.
He is also known to be in debt to several groups around the city, including Hazel Hammie. To pay off what he owes, he frequently helps out around her bakery and runs various errands for her. When he isn't working, he is often found browsing the local markets for books and scrolls, though merchants know him well for his persistent bartering and attempts to avoid paying full price.
