Maximus was once a soldier, serving as a mercenary for various armies throughout the Astral Sea and Material Plane. As a Giff, he was raised in a culture that prized discipline, hierarchy, and martial tradition. His people saw battle as an art, and Maximus was no different.
But the longer he fought, the more disillusioned he became. Though his comrades reveled in the thrill of battle, Maximus began to feel a void. He started wandering after a particularly brutal campaign where his regiment was hired to raze a peaceful village caught in the political crossfire of warring city-states. Guilt-stricken, he left the mercenary life behind, trading his pistol for a staff and his armor for robes.
During his travels, Maximus encountered a powerful druid who showed him a different way to live: in harmony with nature rather than conquering it. Maximus stayed with her druidic circle for years, learning the ways of nature, healing, and the interconnectedness of all living beings. It was during this time that Maximus discovered an innate connection with animals, developing an almost instinctual bond with creatures of the wild. Even fearsome animals like bears responded to his presence, sensing his respect for nature.
One notable event occurred when Maximus was deep in the wilds meditating by a river. A massive bear approached him, clearly agitated by intruders in its territory. Instead of reacting with fear or violence, Maximus calmly reached out with his druidic senses. The bear stopped, stared at him, and then peacefully sat down beside him. From that moment, Maximus understood that nature was not something to be feared but to be embraced as an equal.
This harmony with animals became one of Maximus defining traits, as he would often be seen wandering the forests with animals like wolves, deer, and even birds following him as if he were one of them.
However, Maximus restless spirit could not be confined to one place. Though the druidic circle became his home for a time, his curiosity drove him to continue his wandering. His thirst for knowledge led him to the arcane arts, eventually leading him to a reclusive order of scribes who preserved ancient magical lore. His curiosity for ancient magics and arcane knowledge grew stronger. He set out once again, this time to study the arcane arts with the Order of Forgotten Tomes, blending the primal forces of nature with the intellectual rigor of wizardry.
