backstory: Eskel was born into the harsh world of the Witchers, destined to undergo trials and training at the Kaer Morhen fortress. Abandoned by his parents at a young age, he faced the grueling Witcher trials, enduring pain and hardship to become one of the elite monster hunters. The days at Kaer Morhen were filled with rigorous training in combat and the study of monsters, shaping Eskel into a skilled warrior and knowledgeable hunter. However, tragedy struck when the fortress was attacked by a ruthless invading force that left destruction in its wake. The fortress was razed to the ground, leaving nothing but rubble and ashes behind. Haunted by guilt over the destruction of Kaer Morhen, Eskel carried the weight of responsibility for the loss of his comrades and mentors. He sought solace in hunting monsters, hoping to drown out his remorse with the thrill of battle. But with each creature slain, his guilt only grew, gnawing at him like a relentless beast. For over a century and a half, Eskel wandered the land seeking redemption in the blood of monsters, yet finding none. His mind became a battleground, torn between the weight of his guilt and the flickering ember of hope that still burned within him. The memories of the day Kaer Morhen fell haunted him relentlessly, replaying in vivid detail whenever he closed his eyes. Each night brought torment as Eskel was plagued by nightmares of the burning fortress and the faces of those he had lost. In his dreams he stood powerless, watching as flames consumed everything he held dear while the screams of his comrades echoed in his ears. Among the ashes of Kaer Morhen, Eskel was one of the few to emerge alive. While others perished in the flames, he bore the burden of survival, grappling with the crushing weight of survivor’s guilt. He questioned why fate had spared him while so many others had fallen, tormented by the belief that he should have done more to prevent the tragedy. To cope with his guilt, Eskel withdrew into himself, fearing the bonds of friendship and companionship. He built walls around his heart, afraid to let others in lest they too be lost. Despite his longing for companionship, he struggled to trust others, haunted by the fear of losing them as he had lost his comrades at Kaer Morhen. In his darkest moments, Eskel considered giving in to despair, believing redemption might be beyond his reach. Yet even in the depths of that darkness he found the strength to continue, driven by a quiet determination to somehow make amends for the past. Though the burden of his past never fades, Eskel still believes redemption may be possible. He continues his journey not only to hunt monsters, but to prove to himself that his survival was not meaningless. Each creature slain is another step forward, another attempt to silence the guilt that follows him wherever he goes.
