I was born in the damp, lightless alleys of Hanura Baozang, a place where the sun rarely touches the ground and the air tastes of coal and poverty. My parents were "Unseen"—outcasts who moved in the periphery of the law. When the Gloom-Lung illness took them, their final words weren't a plea for vengeance, but a prayer for you to be "different." But hunger is a god that demands sacrifice. I didn't want to be a criminal, but i refused to be a corpse. I became a ghost of the marketplaces, stealing only what was needed to stop the cramping in my stomach. I lived by a code of Survival, not Greed.
One day the bread i tried to steal wasn't from a merchant; it was from a traveler wrapped in robes the color of a bruised sky—a monk of the Raven’s Talon. I moved perfectly, but they didn't see me with their eyes; they felt my ripple in the shadow.
Instead of the city guard’s lash, i felt a firm, calloused hand on my shoulder. The monk looked at my starved frame and saw not a thief, but a predator without a pack. They brought me to the monastery—a fortress of silence hidden in the gray mists—and fed my mind as well as my body.
The Raven’s Talon taught me that the world is a map of light and dark. They taught me that Grappling isn't just wrestling; it’s anchoring a soul so it cannot drift away. I learned to read the "lay of the land" as if it were a living thing, using my Cartographer’s Tools to chart the spiritual and physical boundaries of the world.
Upon reaching adulthood, the Elders gave me a task. The Raven’s Talon believes the world is changing—that the shadows are thinning or thickening in ways they don't understand.
"Go," they commanded. "Map the hidden places. Not just the mountains and rivers, but the stories of the people. Bring back the tales of the world, for every story told is a memory saved from the void."
