With the recent events of Dourstone Mine behind the group, Rust seeks out The Ledger.
To be shouted in the square, outside the Feral Dog, or from horseback with deputies nearby
“Oi! Hear this and hear it proper!
By order of the law in Diamond Lake, under my hand and seal, Mick Harlowe — called Stumpy Mick, tool-sharpener and known loafer of the lower yards — has been taken into custody on suspicion of grave crimes against this town.
He stands accused of conspiracy in the disappearance of Filge of the Free City, a foreign wizard lately lodged among us under lawful protection, and of involvement in the murders of vagrants, drunks, wastrels, and other unfortunate persons found missing or dead in recent weeks.
Witnesses place him among the poor camps, the wash-lines, the lake shacks, and other places where the missing were last seen. He is known to keep company with beggars, laborers, and idle castoffs, and has long trafficked in tools, gossip, and favors better left unmentioned.
By the evidence presently gathered, and by the authority vested in me as Sheriff of Diamond Lake, judgment has been rendered swift.
At first light tomorrow, Stumpy Mick shall hang by the neck until dead, that the town may see justice done and let this be warning to any who think Diamond Lake too weak, too distracted, or too sickly to punish those who prey upon its own.
Any person found aiding him, speaking against this sentence, or interfering with the lawful business of the sheriff’s office will be treated as accomplice to murder.
Let all decent folk stay clear of the jailhouse tonight.
That is the law. That is the end of it.”
